Basketball Capitals premiers May 14th; Series to appear on ESPN channels and local networks around the world



With just under 10 days until the Euroleague Final Four in London, ESPN and Turkish Airlines today unveil the full broadcast details for the new documentary series, Basketball Capitals presented by Turkish Airlines. The series profiles the culture and passion for basketball within the world’s most iconic cities, and is set to premier across ESPN networks in Europe, Middle, East, and Africa on Tuesday, May 14th. In addition, ESPN has reached new syndication agreements with ten television partners around Europe, proudly bringing the show to millions of fans locally across EMEA.



This first group of eleven television partners will be joined by others in the weeks ahead, as ESPN continues discussions with potential distributors. In addition, ESPN networks around the world will televise the documentaries.


Television coverage of Basketball Capitals presented by Turkish Airlines will be seen in dozens of countries, reaching hundreds of millions of homes. “The series seeks to educate, entertain, and enlighten viewers and we are pleased to collaborate with premier broadcast partners to extend Basketball Capitals to even more fans across Europe, Middle East, and Africa,” said ESPN’s Esteban Apraez, Senior Director, International Marketing Solutions. The series helps illustrate the strong relationship Turkish Airlines has with European sports through first-hand accounts and profiles of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague teams that call these destinations home, including Real Madrid, Alba Berlin, Besiktas JK Istanbul, Fenerbahce Ülker Istanbul, Galatasaray, Anadolu Efes Istanbul, Olympiacos Piraeus, and Panathinaikos Athens.




ESPN has reached deals with television partners in the following eleven territories. Scheduling details vary by region and fans should see local listings in the weeks ahead for the latest details:

•France – Canal+: pay-TV platform in France, Canal+ additionally operates two sports networks.

•Spain - Euskal Telebista: public broadcaster in the Basque region of Spain, operating five TV networks.

•Africa - Setanta Africa: Sports pay-TV broadcaster operating across the region.

•Germany - Sport1: German sports broadcaster based in Munich.

•Italy – Sportitalia: Italian terrestrial and satellite sports broadcaster.

•Turkey – NTVSpor: Turkish sports broadcaster owned by Turkish media group NTV.

•Serbia - IKO Media: Operates two channels - Sportklub and Sportklub+ - across Serbia.

•Spain - Televisio de Catalunya: the public broadcaster in the Spanish region of Catalonia.

•Russia - NTV Plus: pay-TV platform in Russia, it additionally operates two sports networks.

•Greece – NovaSports: Greece’s leading premium sports broadcaster.

Istanbul: The ancient city of Istanbul is at the crossroads of the world, where cultures meet and basketball rivalries run deep. Teams including Fenerbahçe Ülker, Beşiktas, Galatasaray, and Anadolu Efes compete for supremacy and passionate fans swarm to the stadiums to support their favourite clubs. Istanbul’s basketball structure has developed top players on the world stage, including Hedo Türkoğlu and Ömer Aşik, and continues to be a hub for talent.


Athens: The birthplace of the modern Olympic Games in 1896, sport has been a central pillar of life and culture in Athens. In the sport of basketball, Greece has been the birthplace of talents who have achieved on a world stage, and the country’s capital is home to a rivalry between clubs Olympiacos Piraeus and Panathinaikos Athens.





In addition to its third-party television partners, ESPN networks internationally will bring fans all of the documentaries from Tuesday 14 May.
